For orientation they apparently decided that the best metaphor to use would be that “college is a big trip” and as such everything is based off of the idea that you are visiting foreign lands. For example, your academic adviser is referred to as an “ambassador” because apparently that’s what ambassadors do. They made 73 small groups out of the freshman class, all based on your major (I’m in 60). When you get together with these smaller groups they call them “trips” and as there are seven of them you go to the seven continents. This post is devoted to Anatarctica.

In Anartica land people apparently have never heard of simply purchasing luggage. Oh no, it is entirely necessary to hand craft your own out of some paper, cardboard, straws, and string. Also they put their home-made luggage on display and present it to a panel of judges. For some reason.

Work in Progress

After throwing a couple of ideas out there we basically just starting throwing things together and seeing what sticked, which worked better than I honestly thought it would.

Under Construction

After building it it was decided that we would call it the iBox. It held the maximum amount of weight that we could put in, which was cool.

The Final Product

Unfortunately, a group of engineering majors beat us, but that was okay. Because we lost, our OTL (orientation team leader) had to dance to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”. To her chagrin, I videotaped it.

Click me to go to YouTube and watch a video!

None of the other trips thus far have been very conducive to photography, and I don’t think any of the rest will be either. If you REALLY care though, the order is Europe, Antarctica, Australia, South America, Asia, Africa, North America.
